About Reiki and what to expect when coming for a treatment.

About Reiki

Reiki is a form of natural energy therapy that can be used for stress reduction and relaxation and is believed to promote the body's own natural healing ability.

Reiki was founded over 100 years ago in Japan by a lay Buddhist monk called Mikao Usui. The Japanese name Reiki can be translated as "Universal Life Force Energy". The therapy is based upon the theory that life force energy runs through us, and that if our life force energy is depleted then we are more likely to feel run down, lacking in energy, feel stressed or unwell, whereas if our life force energy is high, then we are more likely to feel well, happy and energised.

During a Reiki session the Reiki practitioner acts as a conduit for the Reiki, channelling Reiki into the client to help clear any energy blockages and restore the flow and balance of energy throughout the body, mind and spirit.

Reiki can be used to help clients with :

Deep relaxation

Reducing levels of stress and anxiety

Emotional healing and spiritual growth

Improving sleep

Improving energy levels

Helping to clear the mind and improve clarity of thought

Improved mood and wellbeing.

Reiki is a complementary therapy meaning that it is safe to receive alongside conventional medical treatments. It is not to be used in place of conventional medical care. If you are concerned about any aspect of your health please consult a GP or other qualified medical practitioner.

Why Choose Reiki?

Reiki is a simple, safe and gentle therapy that can provide a sense of wellbeing in body, mind and spirit. It is suitable for people of all ages and all needs and is a complementary therapy that can work well either on its own or alongside conventional medical treatment.

Reiki can be received either hands on or hands off, making it an excellent therapy choice for clients with an aversion or sensitivity to being touched. It can also be carried out at a distance if required.

Reiki is chosen by many for its potential to reduce stress and anxiety, and to induce deep relaxation that in turn can promote the body's own natural healing ability. Reiki is also chosen by clients with chronic pain conditions to help with pain management. Reiki also has the potential to improve emotional wellbeing by helping clients to process and release emotional blockages so is of particular benefit during times of emotional distress. Reiki is also chosen by some clients as part of their own spiritual growth and development as it offers the chance to clear the mind and provide time and space for introspection and self-reflection.

If you are curious to try Reiki but do not wish to commit to a full session on its own, I am always happy to provide you with a combined treatment session. Reiki works beautifully alongside the other therapies that I offer.

Preparation for Reiki

Your Reiki session will begin with a consultation. If this is your first session with me we will discuss what you expect from the treatment and I will answer any questions you may have. I will I will then complete a confidential questionnaire with you. I will ask you questions about your health and lifestyle, any conditions and symptoms you are experiencing, together with details of medications you may be taking. It is usually safe to receive Reiki alongside conventional medicine.

I will ask you to sign a consent form before any therapy commences.

I will ask you if you are sensitive to touch, and whether you would prefer to receive the therapy hands on or hands off (or a mixture of both).

I will also ask you if you are OK to lie down to receive the therapy or whether you need to be seated to receive the therapy. I will offer you an eye pillow and a blanket.

I will then ask you to move onto the treatment couch or a suitable chair to receive the therapy. You will not need to remove any clothing but I will ask you to remove your watch and to place your mobile phone into airplane or do not disturb mode.

The Reiki Treatment

Once you are comfortably lying on my treatment couch or sitting comfortably in a chair I will put on some gentle music and offer you a blanket and an eye pillow. I will then take a few moments to prepare myself.

I will then place my hands lightly on you (or hold them slightly off your body as agreed) and will move quietly around you, holding my hands in a number of positions either on or off the body as guided. Reiki will flow wherever it is needed and will only ever work for the greatest and highest good. Clients report feeling sensations of warmth, coolness, tingling or pulsating as the Reiki flows but it is not uncommon to feel none of these sensations. Most clients report feeling a deep relaxation and a feeling of overall wellbeing.

I will use my singing bowl to let you know that we have reached the end of the healing part of the session.

Aftercare

At the end of the treatment you may feel deeply relaxed. I will ensure that you are fully grounded and that you have a few moments to rest and recover. I will give you a glass of water to drink as you gently bring your awareness back to the present.

I will give you after care advice on how to get the maximum benefit from your treatment session so that you can enjoy the sense of wellbeing that it brings. You will be advised to eat a light diet, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or other stimulants in the hours following your treatment and most importantly to listen to your body.

We can discuss plans for future Reiki sessions.

Some frequently asked questions...

How many treatments will I need?

Every client is different, and so is their response to the treatment. The response to Reiki can be immediate but sometimes it can take longer than one session to feel the benefit.

A course of regular Reiki treatments may be the most effective, with sessions weekly, fortnightly or less frequently according to your needs.

It is always your decision how frequently to attend for Reiki, taking into account all your circumstances.

What happens in a treatment?

During a treatment Reiki energy is channelled by the Reiki practitioner and flows into the client. The client remains fully clothed at all times. The practitioner places their hands onto or just off the client's body in a series of hand positions that vary according to the client's needs.

The whole treatment usually lasts around 45 minutes as a stand alone treatment or 30 minutes if added on to another therapy.

What does Reiki feel like?

Some clients report feeling sensations of heat, coolness, pulsating or tingling during a treatment. Others do not report these sensations during the treatment but report feelings of deep relaxation, the release of stress and tension, a general sense of overall wellbeing and improved mood. Some report increased energy levels and improved concentration. My clients all agree that it is a pleasant, nurturing and enjoyable experience.

Who can have Reiki?

Anyone can have Reiki.

Reiki is extremely gentle, and can be safely received by people of all ages and conditions: from babies and children at the start of life to the elderly and frail and those on end of life or palliative care.

It is safe for pregnant women to receive Reiki during their pregnancy, and for Mums who are breastfeeding their babies, too.

What are your fees & availability?

Reiki sessions on average last 45 minutes (plus consultation time) and currently cost £40 per session.

Note that if you want to cancel an appointment I require 24 hours’ notice; otherwise you will still need to pay for any sessions missed. I accept payment in cash, by card (I have a card reader) or by bank transfer.

Is there any Reason why I can't have a treatment?

There are only a very few occasions when I would not be able to treat you. These include:

  • If you have a fever
  • If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • If you have an unhealed broken bone
